Dupont Circle as a Social Space

Dupont Circle, the most recognized urban form in the District of Columbia, has not been a place where any architectural attention has been focused for many years. Our proposal seeks to rethink the circle, not as a traffic node, but as a social and cultural space.

Farmer's Market: The social node from which the proposal emerged, the idea is to anchor the city to its agricultural hinterland.

Agriculture Department Annex: House the division of the agriculture department responsible for research and development of new markets for organic crops.

Public Library: The simple provision of a much needed library in the neighborhood.

Dupont Circle: Re-establish the circle as a social place by repaving the entire circle to one level and moving the existing fountain off axis so the center of the space can be occupied.

Theater: 2000 seat space for the staging of political satire.
