White House Redux
A Deflected Axis Mundi
We regard the National Mall as both sacred and profane, and as a space of continuous historic sedimentation. The idea that the Mall is complete ignores the depths of history and the persepctives for the future. Our proposal for a conceptual competition for the Mall includes the idea that the Mall is a place of fluid interpretation, continuous revisions, erasures, additions, mistakes, ruins, play, crowds, disturbances.
The reductionist simplicity of axes is something we hope to deflect and refract into more complex, fluid geometries where the random encounter, the accidental conversation might add complexitiy and greater depth to the unacknowledged legislation of the simple act of human encounter.
